Trump just attacked Comey, Hillary, McCabe, the FBI and Justice Department in hysterical Saturday rant

- April 07, 2018

President Trump embarked on a furious Twitter tirade this afternoon, raging at the Department of Justice for apparently failing to respond rapidly enough to requests from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee to provide documents related to the FISA warrants issued against members of the Trump campaign during the lead up to the 2016 election.

Warrants issued by a judge under Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act are aimed at those believed to be operating on behalf of other nations, which is why one was filed against known Kremlin associate and Trump campaign advisor Carter Page two summers ago.

The application for that warrant is not a simple matter. While the FISA courts are notorious for giving the FBI the benefit of the doubt when it comes to approving surveillance warrants, one still has to produce substantial evidence to make your case to the judge, and the evidence against Page was plentiful, to say the least:

The Washington Post reports that the FBI had evidence that Page was known to associate with Russian intelligence operatives in the past and had previously turned up in a separate spying case:

Among other things, the application cited contacts that he had with a Russian intelligence operative in New York City in 2013, officials said. Those contacts had earlier surfaced in a federal espionage case brought by the Justice Department against the intelligence operative and two other Russian agents. In addition, the application said Page had other contacts with Russian operatives that have not been publicly disclosed, officials said.

Given his shady record, it certainly follows that a judge would think it appropriate to check in on what Page was up to.

But Trump and his Republican allies are desperately trying to find anything they possibly can to discredit Special Counsel Mueller and the Justice Department’s investigation into Trump and his team’s alleged collusion with Russian agents to tilt the 2016 election in his favor – and they think the FISA warrant application might be the thing they need to keep their heads above water.

The now-forgotten brouhaha over House Oversight Chairman Devin Nunes’ (R-CA) infamous “memo” was the beginning of the smear campaign – and now the Judiciary Committee is stepping up to give their fellow traitors a hand in their efforts to obstruct justice.

By conflating the FBI’s investigation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private email server with the fake controversy over the FISA warrants, Trump is forging a narrative to discredit the Justice Department and Mueller’s investigation that simultaneously appeals to his base’s driving impulses – their delusional paranoia and their self-righteous sense of victimhood.

But all the tweets in the world aren’t going to stop Special Counsel Mueller from getting to the bottom of what really happened in 2016.
