Despite its reputation as a bastion of progressive Portlandia-style political opinion, Oregon, particularly in the rural portions of the state, is also the home to a stubborn breed of racists.
The latest example to stagger into public attention is the Clackamas County man sitting in the county prison after being charged with hate crimes against a black female Oregon State Police officer, according to local TV station KOIN.
Jimmy Joe James Jr., was in the midst of being arrested by the officer at a fast food restaurant on heroin possession charges when he launched into a verbal tirade against the policewoman, using the “N” word, the “C” word, and all the words with letters one uses when threatening to cut someone’s head off.
JJ James Jr. is apparently not big on exercising his Miranda rights since he reportedly confirmed, “Yes, I’m threatening you” after telling the officer he would sever her head from her body.
While the heroin charges were later dropped, James was jailed on charges of 2nd-degree intimidation and is being held on $40,000 bail. He also faces a parole violation originating from a prior weapons case, for which he is ineligible for bail.
Mr. James pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
