While President Trump has revived the old U.S. fascist trope from the 1930’s, “America First,” as his campaign slogan of choice, the fact is that America is not always first.
That’s true when it comes to so many aspects of life, including life expectancy, healthcare outcomes, and literacy rates, but it’s particularly obvious at the Winter Olympics this year.
The Netherlands, which has had to suffer through a Trump-appointed ambassador who spreads malicious lies about the country with which he has been picked to maintain diplomatic relations, managed to get their revenge in a particularly appropriate manner after their national team swept the gold, silver, and bronze medals in the women’s 3,000-meter speed skating event in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
As the Dutch skaters made their way to the medals podium, two Dutch fans unfurled a large banner of the Netherland’s own red. white and blue flag with a message written on it aimed directly at Donald Trump.

“Sorry Mr. President. The Netherlands First… and 2nd… and 3rd,” the banner read, tweaking Trump’s “America First” boasting right where it hurts the most, in the winner’s circle.
The Dutch fan who posted the photo of the banner on Twitter followed it up with a chart of the medal count at the end of day two of the Winter games that reinforced his point in reply to a taunting American Olympics fan who still insisted that the U.S. was number one in the world.

A much wiser president once admonished the nation to “speak softly and carry a big stick.” Trump apparently couldn’t hear that advice over the sound of his own bragging. At least we can count on the Netherlands to put him in his place.
