Earlier today, our incompetent president said that he would “love” for the government to shut down again if he doesn’t get everything on immigration wishlist. He came across as a petulant child threatening to take his toys home if the other kids on the playground refuse to do as he says.
“We’ll do a shutdown and it’s worth it for our country. I’d love to see a shutdown if we don’t get this stuff taken care of. If we have to shut it down because the Democrats don’t want safety and, unrelated but still related, they don’t want to take care of our military, then shut it down. We’ll go with another shutdown,” said Trump.
DACA protections for over 800,000 undocumented Americans who have been in this country since childhood are set to expire in March. Trump has been holding these people hostage in an attempt to strong-arm Democrats into funding his wall and ending family reunification which he calls “chain migration.”
What Trump seems to fail to realize is that Democrats have already agreed not to tie DACA protections to the current funding vote. It will strictly be a military and domestic spending bill.
Republicans have promised that they will take up the issue of DACA afterward, but their repeated demonstrations of mendacity and bad faith means the Democrats should be on guard lest they and the DREAMers get stabbed in the back by the GOP. Now, Trump seems to already be undermining the Republican promise by threatening another shutdown.
During a meeting on the MS-13 gang, Trump said he supports a government shutdown if Democrats won't agree to tighten immigration laws: "If we don't change it, let's have a shutdown. … I'd love to see a shutdown if we don't get this stuff taken care of." https://t.co/IghwpT0aPr pic.twitter.com/rlUMfOu7WD

Immediately after Trump made his shutdown comments, Representative Barbara Comstock (R-VA) disagreed with him to his face. “We don’t need a government shutdown on this,” she said, adding that the previous government shutdown was bad for both parties.
Visibly peeved, Trump immediately talked over and insisted that the GOP isn’t getting support from Democrats, so a shutdown might be necessary. He repeated his talking points a few more times before saying tersely dismissing her with a, “Thanks, Barbara.”
"We don't need a government shutdown on this. I think both sides have learned that a government shutdown was bad," GOP Rep. Comstock says on immigration.

Democrats must leave all of their tools on the table to protect DACA recipients. They must be willing to shut down the government, not frivolously as Trump suggests, but as a way to protect hundreds of thousands of hard-working undocumented Americans from our racist president.
