While speaking with TMZ, Grammy-nominated rapper Cardi B was asked when she would perform at a Super Bowl halftime show.
This is not Cardi B’s first time defending Colin Kaepernick, the blacklisted athlete.
All these football team owners talking and all lat but when is y'all going to hire Colin Kaepernick ?
All I want to know is… when are they going to hire Colin Kaepernick ?
Kaepernick famously began kneeling during the 2016 preseason and was later joined by others in a show of solidarity.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Despite strong stats, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been unable to get picked up by another team amid pointed attacks from the White House.
Trump has been outspoken in his opposition to Kaepernick and the protests, wrongly claiming that those who participate are attacking the flag. He has even gone so far as to claim that those who kneel during the National Anthem should be fired.
“Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired.” Trump said of kneeling players at a rally in Alabama in September.
Of course, it’s a clear fact that those who kneel are protesting against police brutality – not our flag, our soldiers, or any other convenient scapegoat – but that hasn’t stopped the President from spreading his misleading propaganda.
While Trump and his Republican cohorts will undoubtedly try to paint a picture of what a “patriot” looks like today, remember that there is nothing more American than protest, standing up for what is right, and protecting the institutions that truly make this country great.
Kudos to Cardi B for recognizing that.
