President Barack Obama’s former Attorney General Eric Holder fueled speculation about a possible presidential bid today according to report by PBS News Hour.
Speaking at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor in Washington D.C., Holder was asked if he would consider an attempt to garner the Democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential contest. His response, “We’ll see,” put Holder in the center of a large number of potential candidates for the Democrats.
Among the other political veterans said to be examining their chances are Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and former Vice President Joe Biden, so Holder will have to weigh his chances against a fairly formidable group.
While Holder may or may not go for the big job, he is serious about considering a run for some form of elected office and says he’ll make a decision by year’s end.
In the meantime, the former Attorney General is keeping busy with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, a group dedicated to fighting the Republicans’ electoral advantage achieved through state-level gerrymandering by helping more local Democrats win in state legislative and gubernatorial races.
While Republican gerrymandered districts are beginning to be struck down by court challenges over ridiculously contorted districts designed to ensure the party’s hegemony at the expense of representational democracy, Holder still has a long hard fight ahead to overcome the structural advantages that the Republicans have spent many years engineering.
The fact that some Pennsylvania Republicans are vowing to ignore the Supreme Court decision striking down their blatantly partisan redistricting maps shows just how difficult the struggle ahead will be.
Any victories that Holder achieves in his fight against gerrymandering, however, will surely help him should he eventually decide to run for office, whether it be for President or some lower office.
We anxiously await seeing what Holder ultimately decides,
