President Trump’s self-aggrandizing military parade idea has been roundly criticized as the stuff of insecure, tin-pot dictators who want to show off the shiny new toys that they’ve wasted their nation’s money on in a worthless show of bravado.
Trump’s parade is apparently what his supporters regard as bold new thinking, while everyone else just sees a huge waste of taxpayer money being spent to stroke the ego of the Toddler-in-Chief.
The latest notable figure to attack the President’s foolish plans for a spectacle of armaments is Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a decorated Iraq war veteran who lost both her legs in combat, yet recovered to win a Senate seat after retiring from the Army as a lieutenant colonel.
Duckworth has often shown her contempt for the President’s military braggadocio, calling the draft-dodging Trump, who has no military experience whatsoever, “Cadet Bone Spurs” after the nominal reason Trump avoided his service in the armed forces which was mandatory at the time he was granted a medical deferment.
Unlike Trump, Duckworth has some credibility when she says she is speaking on behalf of overseas troops she was once a member of herself.
She attacked Trump’s reasons for wanting a parade like the French Bastille Day celebration that Trump attended last year and presumably inspired his lust for marital pageantry in a statement released today.
“This parade would not only waste millions of taxpayer dollars, it would also cost our military precious time and resources,” Duckworth said. “Our troops in danger overseas don’t need a show of bravado, they need steady leadership, long-term funding and resources so they can stay safe while protecting and defending our nation.”
Senator Duckworth’s comments come a day after she responded to the President’s calling Democrats who did not applaud his puerile State of the Union address “treasonous” with a scathing tweet.
We don't live in a dictatorship or a monarchy. I swore an oath—in the military and in the Senate—to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, not to mindlessly cater to the whims of Cadet Bone Spurs and clap when he demands I clap https://t.co/99gW1yalDl

While Senator Duckworth swore an oath to protect the Constitution, just as Trump did at his inauguration, she at least demonstrates an understanding of the founding document of our nation, unlike the President who has failed to grasp the most basic tenets of our system of governance, particularly the separation of powers that ensures that Senator Duckworth and her Senatorial colleagues will never have to do what Trump demands.
