President Donald Trump could be his own undoing, in a farcical ending that would be the perfect denouement for the tawdriest presidency in American history. CNN reports that despite his lawyers’ urging to the contrary Trump wants to sit down for an interview with Mueller.
Previously, The New York Times reported that Donald Trump’s lawyers were advising him not to speak personally with special counsel Robert Mueller as part of the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The attorneys fear that Trump could end up making false statements to Mueller’s team and subsequently be charged with lying to the investigation. It’s not an unreasonable expectation, given that lying broadly and impulsively is something Trump does every day. It seems to be something he genuinely enjoys.
It’s worth noting that former Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos has already pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during the Russia investigation.
Apparently, the president thinks he knows better than his legal counsel. CNN’s source told them that Trump thinks his past experience being involved with lawsuits and testifying under oath makes him bulletproof to Mueller.
“He thinks he can work this. He doesn’t realize how high the stakes are,” the source said. “You can’t get up and walk away. It’s not that easy,” they added.
Once again, Trump’s inflated ego and his oversized sense of self have convinced him that he’s capable of something he is not. He thought he could run the most powerful country in the world, and we’ve already seen he lacks the intelligence, focus, and temperament to do it well. His administration is an utter disaster and this Mueller interview, if he goes through with it, is sure to be more of the same.
Trump is an addled old man who lies every time he opens his mouth. Robert Mueller is a career law enforcement agent and former Director of the FBI. Smart money is on the latter.
