A Republican deputy mayor in New Jersey has resigned today from his position after receiving massive backlash for a stunningly racist post he penned on his Facebook page.
Rick Blood, deputy mayor for the Mendham Township Committee, compared immigrants to animals saying they are like “hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons” that have “overtaken your basement,” reports ABC News.
The Daily Record adds that Blood has since apologized for sharing the post, claiming that a friend sent him the text and he was simply sharing it. While Blood has since deleted his horrible rant, it spread so quickly that screenshots are still widely available.
Tellingly, the hateful post starts off by praising Trump. Blood goes on to concede that the president is a “bit of an ass” and an “egomaniac” but that he’s exactly what’s needed to get rid of immigrants or as Blood calls them “raccoons.”
The entire thing is rambling and pulsing with bigotry. It’s a sobering reminder of exactly what the modern Republican Party stands for under its current leader. One of Trump’s first meaningful acts after taking office was to end DACA and betray hundreds of thousands of undocumented Americans who have been here since childhood. His campaign was built from the ground up on the vilification of Mexicans and Muslims.
The president has galvanized the worst elements of society and emboldened them to share regressive views that would have been unthinkable to share publicly only a few years ago. Blood’s dehumanization of immigrants is indefensible and is unfortunately in lockstep with the current administration’s rhetoric.
