Trump’s ICE just ruined a 6-year-old paraplegic boy’s life

- Januari 06, 2018

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau (ICE) just announced that it will continue with the deportation of the only trained medical caregiver to a 6-year-old paraplegic boy in Ohio according to a report in USA Today.

27-year-old Yancarlos Mendez of Springdale, Ohio is a dual citizen of Spain and the Dominican Republic who has lived with Sandra Mendoza, the mother of the young paraplegic Ricky Solis, for the last three years. He is the only father Ricky has known since Mendoza left Solis’s birth father due to domestic physical and emotional violence and is the child’s sole trained-provider of medical care.

According to ICE, Mendez:

“entered the United States lawfully under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) before violating the program terms by overstaying his visit for a period exceeding two years. VWP participants waive their rights to a hearing before an immigration judge and are subject to detention prior to their removal.

“ICE has carefully reviewed his case and determined he was ineligible for any agency relief, and as such will move forward with his repatriation to his home country.”

Little Ricky was in a car crash in February that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Mendez subsequently spent copious time undergoing medical training to be able to take care of his step-son until a Butler County judge sentenced him to 30 days in the county jail for driving without a valid license. The Butler County Sheriff’s office is obviously not a sanctuary haven since they quickly alerted federal immigration officials who transferred Mendez to federal custody after he completed his sentence for his drivers’ license offense.

Mendez’s attorney had applied with ICE for a one-year suspension of deportation for her client due to the hardships that the loss of a caregiver would have on Ricky, but to no avail.

With Mendez in custody and Medoza having had to quit her job to tend to her son full-time, she and her son are facing eviction due to her inability to earn enough to cover their rent in the absence of Mendez’s income from his job as an auto mechanic.

This is just another example of how Trump’s heartless immigration policies have destroyed lives and families. It’s time to restore sanity to immigration decisions, and for the Republican party to learn what “family values” truly means.
