President Trump continues his quest to uproot this country at its basic foundations by attacking the institutions that have safeguarded our democracy for generations. Yesterday, it was announced that FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe would be stepping down early from his job, effective immediately, making him the latest in a long line of departures under Trump, in what has become an unprecedented hemorrhaging of key federal employees.
For the past several months President Trump has repeatedly taken to Twitter to attack the FBI in an effort to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. There have been numerous indictments already, and no apparent sign that the probe will be winding down anytime soon. Now, Trump is starting to lash out like a cornered animal.
While professional liar White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders insists that the administration had no role in the McCabe ousting, hers and Trump’s long, long track record of mendacity means the veracity of her claim is dubious at best. Reports that Trump was furious at McCabe for saying that fired ex-FBI Director James Comey should be allowed to use a federal plane for travel after his termination. The president even took a potshot at McCabe’s wife’s failed State Senate bid.
Meanwhile, the Republicans are refusing to stand up for the rule of law despite their longstanding contention that they’re the party of “law and order.” They’ve now revealed themselves to be craven hypocrites, only interested in protecting themselves and the kleptocratic leader of their party.
The nonsense Nunes memo, which has been stripped of context by being removed from the underlying materials is one big Republican attempt to hurt the FBI and shore up Trump’s defenses in advance of whatever bombshell revelations rock his administration next. The announcement that the Republicans would be using the House Intelligence Committee to open an investigation into the FBI is more of the same.
Former Attorney General Sally Yates, who was fired by Trump after refusing to enforce his racist and unconstitutional Muslim ban, has taken to Twitter to weigh in on the growing storm in Washingon D.C.
She correctly points out that Trump hasn’t managed to destroy our democracy yet, despite his best efforts. She urges Americans to remain strong and collectively strive to uphold the values we’ve long championed. As she succinctly states it: “We’re better than this.
Despite relentless attacks on our democratic institutions and norms, our resilience has kept our country strong. But we will remain so only if we strive to live up to the American values that make us who we are. We’re better than this.

Hopefully, Yates is right, and the country’s democratic norms will survive Trump’s campaign of systematic dismantlement. But in order for that to happen, he has to go. Democrats need to seize back the House and Senate and promptly impeach him before he does any more irreparable damage.
