With Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam earlier tonight beating out Ed Gillespie for that state’s governorship, Democrats continued their shellacking of Republicans, winning State Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor, and picking up 15 seats and counting in the Virginia House of Delegates. Until now, Republicans held a 66 out of 100 supermajority in the Virginia House of Delegates, but tonight the tide just turned in a dramatic repudiation of Trump’s failed Republican leadership — the biggest win for Virginia Democrats since 1899.
Democrats will have veto power over Virginia's next post-census electoral map for the first time since 1991.

According to sources on the ground, if Democrats pick up district HD-40, in which the Democratic candidate is currently running 185 votes ahead, they will have definitively tied the Virginia House of Delegates. If any one of the recounts in the state’s 27th, 28th, and 94th districts flip for Team Blue, the game will irrevocably change. Either way, by overturning the Republican supermajority, Democrats have already gained veto power over redistricting for the first time in 26 years.
Top Republicans, like Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, and John Cornyn, have already been jumping the Trump ship of late, but tonight’s sweeping Democratic victories in Virginia and New Jersey will no doubt send many more in the party scurrying off the sinking vessel.
Though many Republicans already found Trump’s incompetence, instability, intemperate rhetoric, and crude behavior alarming during the election, they cynically hung on with their support, in order to pass their legislative agenda to steal from the poor and give to the rich.
Virginia Republicans, led by gubernatorial candidate Gillespie, ran a bitter and racist campaign against Democrats this year, even throwing in nasty voter suppression tactics in the 11th hour, including tweets and robocalls falsely telling Democrats that their polling places had moved.
With the president’s approval rating rapidly declining, and Democrats trouncing Republicans in state and special elections, we are likely to witness opportunistic right-wingers suddenly growing a “conscience” and speaking out against the Deplorable-in-Chief. If they think Trump’s abysmal presidency will make previously uncontested seats around the country turn Blue in 2018, they will vote to impeach him.
Furthermore, despite Trump’s endless attempts to crush Obamacare, including slashing advertising funds for the program by 90%, enrollment is actually up 90%. And tonight, Maine became the 33rd state to expand Medicaid under Obamacare provisions.
While Republicans have failed to pass even one item on their legislative agenda in Trump’s first year in office, Democrats have been organizing steadily down to the precinct level around the country, as they learned to do during the two presidential campaigns of Barack Obama, the first community organizer to become leader of the free world.
Although Trump has worked consistently to erase the glowing legacy of America’s first black president, Obama’s legacy is erasing him.
